Post-Treatment Care After Root Canal

At Whitfield Endodontics, our goal is to ensure a smooth and comfortable recovery following your root canal treatment. While most patients experience minimal discomfort, following these guidelines will help promote healing and prevent complications.

What to Expect After Treatment

  • Mild Soreness – It is normal to experience some tenderness or mild discomfort around the treated tooth and surrounding gums for a few days. This is due to natural inflammation and the healing process.

  • Sensitivity – The tooth may feel slightly sensitive, especially when chewing. This should gradually subside within a few days to a week.

  • Swelling or Discomfort – While uncommon, minor swelling may occur. Over-the-counter pain relievers can help manage discomfort.

Pain Management

To alleviate discomfort, we recommend the following:

  • Over-the-Counter Pain Relievers – Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) or acetaminophen (Tylenol) can help reduce inflammation and pain. Take as directed unless otherwise instructed by your doctor.

  • Avoid Chewing on the Treated Tooth – Until the final restoration (such as a crown) is placed by your general dentist, avoid chewing on the treated tooth to prevent fractures or damage.

Oral Hygiene and Care

  • Continue brushing and flossing as usual, but be gentle around the treated area.

  • Rinse with warm salt water if your gums feel sore.

  • Avoid sticky, hard, or chewy foods until your tooth is fully restored.

Final Restoration is Essential

A root canal-treated tooth is not fully protected until it has been restored by your dentist. In most cases, a crown is recommended to strengthen and protect the tooth. Please schedule a follow-up appointment with your general dentist as soon as possible to complete the restoration.

When to Contact our Office

While complications are rare, please contact us if you experience:

  • Severe or worsening pain that does not improve with medication.

  • Swelling that increases significantly or persists for more than a few days.

  • A return of symptoms, such as prolonged sensitivity or discomfort.

  • An uneven bite or difficulty chewing after the numbness wears off.
