Post-Treatment Care After Apicoectomy

At Whitfield Endodontics, we are committed to ensuring a smooth recovery after your apicoectomy, a specialized microsurgical procedure designed to preserve your natural tooth. Following these aftercare instructions will help promote healing and minimize discomfort.

What to Expect After Surgery

  • Mild Swelling & Bruising – Some swelling and bruising near the surgical site are normal and typically peak within 48 hours before gradually improving.

  • Discomfort – You may experience mild to moderate discomfort, which can be managed with medication.

  • Minor Bleeding – Slight bleeding or oozing from the surgical site may occur within the first 24 hours.

  • Numbness – If local anesthesia was used, you may experience temporary numbness, which should wear off within a few hours.

Pain & Swelling Management

  • Take prescribed or over-the-counter pain medication as directed. Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) or acetaminophen (Tylenol) can help with pain and inflammation.

  • Apply a cold compress (ice pack wrapped in a cloth) to the outside of your face near the surgical area for 10–15 minutes at a time during the first 24 hours to reduce swelling.

  • Keep your head elevated when lying down to minimize swelling.

Oral Hygiene & Wound Care

  • DO NOT rinse, spit, or use a straw for the first 24 hours, as this can disrupt healing.

  • After 24 hours, you may gently rinse with warm salt water (½ teaspoon salt in 8 oz of warm water) 2–3 times per day to keep the area clean.

  • Avoid brushing near the surgical site for the first few days. Instead, carefully clean the rest of your mouth while avoiding direct contact with the stitches.

Diet & Activity Restrictions

  • Soft Diet – Stick to soft foods (yogurt, mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs, smoothies) for the first few days. Avoid hard, crunchy, or hot foods.

  • No Smoking or Alcohol – Smoking and alcohol can delay healing and should be avoided for at least 5–7 days.

  • Avoid Strenuous Activity – Refrain from heavy lifting, intense exercise, or bending over for at least 48 hours to prevent increased swelling and bleeding.

Sutures & Follow-Up

  • If sutures were placed, they may dissolve on their own, or we will schedule a follow-up visit to remove them.

  • It is essential to attend your follow-up appointment so we can monitor healing and ensure the best outcome.
